About Teatro La Scala

Teatro alla Scala is Milan's opera house and one of the best-known in the world. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria backed the building of a new theater to replace the Royal Ducal Theatre, which burned down in 1776. The neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini designed it, and it opened on August 3, 1778.

Premieres at La Scala include Verdi's Otello and Falstaff and Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Turandot, and singers such as Maria Callas have performed on its stage. After a restoration by the architects Mario Botta and Elisabetta Fabbri, the theater reopened on December 7, 2004. Today it presents opera, ballet and concerts.

The box office and the museum keep separate hours.

The Box Office:

  • Monday to Saturday: 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM
  • Performance Evenings: The box office opens 2 hours before the start and stays open after the show begins, for tickets to that evening's performance only. For Filarmonica della Scala concerts it opens 1 hour before.

  • Daily: 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM (Last admission at 5:00 PM)
  • Special Holiday Hours (Dec 24 & 31): 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM (Last admission at 2:30 PM)

Things to Know Before Visiting the Teatro La Scala

Dress in keeping with the decorum of the theater. Shorts and sleeveless T-shirts are not allowed in the auditorium, and tickets are not refunded in that case.

Children aged 4 and over are admitted to performances. The "Great Performances for Children" shows are open to all ages, and every child needs a ticket.

Latecomers with stalls or gallery seats wait until the interval. Box ticket holders may take their seats after the performance has started.

Photography and audio or video recording are not allowed in the theater, and mobile phones may not be used in the auditorium.

Wheelchair-accessible seating is in the stalls, reached by ramp. Wheelchairs are not permitted in the boxes or galleries, and there is no lift to the boxes.

Facilities at Teatro La Scala

- Three bars in the Parterre, Boxes and Galleries foyers serve drinks and sandwiches before performances and during intermissions. Next door, the "Il Foyer alla Scala" restaurant has an entrance on Largo Ghiringhelli and is open daily for breakfast, aperitivo and pre- and post-theater dinners.

- The stalls and galleries have free cloakrooms, and each box has its own private cloakroom. Umbrellas, large bags and other bulky items must be left there.

- Subtitle screens in the boxes, galleries and seat backs of the stalls show the libretto in Italian and English. Not every seat has a screen, but the free Libretto Scala app shows the same text on a smartphone.

Yes. Your museum ticket includes a view of the auditorium from the third-tier boxes, as long as no rehearsal, performance or other event is taking place. The museum website lists the time slots when the hall is visible.
