About Cripta di San Sepolcro

Cripta di San Sepolcro (Google Maps)

The Cripta di San Sepolcro is an underground church beneath the Church of San Sepolcro in Milan, Italy. It was built in 1030 by the mint master Rozzone on the site of the ancient Roman forum and was first dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In 1100, after the reconquest of Jerusalem, it was rededicated to the Holy Sepulchre. In the second half of the 16th century, Saint Charles Borromeo chose it as his personal place of prayer.

The crypt was closed to the public for about fifty years and reopened in 2016. A restoration funded by Italy’s Ministry of Culture and completed in 2019 recovered its decorated surfaces, including the starry sky painted on the vaults. Today the crypt and the church above it are managed by the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana.
